Words of Wisdom
It is indeed a proud day for us as we witness the launch of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, which has been modeled with the very same aspirations as those of a certain John Harvard, a clergyman whose generous estate donations so many years ago inspired the advent of the world-famous Harvard University’s charitable foundation and endowments.
The man behind our Malaysian version of these aspirations is the Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah. He has the distinction of being a pioneer and innovator in the field of private education in Malaysia.
Not only an entrepreneur in bringing quality private higher education to Malaysia, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah is a social entrepreneur as well. Guided by his vision and deep desire to give to society, he has extended scholarships to deserving and needy students in past years through his Sunway Education Trust Fund. I witnessed the advent of this Trust Fund when it was first launched in March 1997 when I was the Education Minister of Malaysia. Today, I am happy to be a part of the next important chapter in its illustrious history as it evolves into the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah has set a fine example for others to emulate by going beyond the business of education and launching this Foundation.
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage like-minded individuals and corporations to contribute to this pioneering effort as education is a shared cause.
The Government believes education is a vital tool, imperative for the cultivation of new generations of qualified human capital, whom are needed in helping to drive the nation to even greater heights in the future.
That is why we are ready, prepared and happy to partner with private educationists, such as Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah and his Sunway Education Group, and all others active in this field to make possible the consistent provision of quality education to future generations and to produce learned graduates.
May I take this opportunity to wish
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah and the Foundation all the very best for the future; may your success be as great as John Harvard’s.
